Detectors

Smoke detectors are initiating devices used to detect the presence of smoke and signal a fire alarm control panel. In commercial fire alarm systems, these devices provide early warning of potential fire conditions and are typically installed in accordance with building codes and system design requirements.

Commercial smoke detectors are commonly available in photoelectric or ionization configurations. Photoelectric models are generally more responsive to smoldering fires, while ionization models are designed to respond more quickly to flaming fires. Many modern systems use photoelectric detection due to current code preferences and application requirements.

Smoke detectors may be addressable or conventional. Addressable detectors communicate individually with the control panel and report a specific device location when activated. Conventional detectors are wired in zones and report alarms at the zone level. Proper selection depends on the type of fire alarm panel and the signaling method used in the existing system.

Compatibility is critical. Detectors must match the panel series and communication protocol in use. Many models are manufacturer-specific and not interchangeable across systems.
